Services
Electrical upgrades
The work everything else plugs into: more service when the building needs it, LED lighting that pays for itself, and backup power that passes inspection — funded as the make-ready of whatever you are adding.
Power & distribution
When the building needs more than the service can give.
- Load studies before design, so the upgrade is sized to measured demand plus the new load, not to a guess.
- Service and feeder upgrades — new service entrance, larger conductors, re-fed panels; for homes, the 100- to 200-amp panel upgrade that EV chargers, heat pumps and batteries often need.
- Switchgear, panelboards and transformers: replacement of obsolete gear, added sections, secondary distribution to new equipment.
- Utility coordination — the ComEd New Business request, the meter and CT arrangement, the energization date.
Who performs it
Public and prevailing-wage work runs with our union crews at Boyd Electric, who have built distribution for schools, municipal buildings and data centers for 30+ years. Private commercial upgrades run with our open-shop team at Gullen Energy. We scope the work, hold the schedule and answer for the outcome.
The union or open-shop call is made for the owner's benefit — the labor rules the job is bid under, the schedule it has to hit, and the budget it has to land in.
Lighting & controls
Fluorescent and HID that cost more to run than to replace.
- LED retrofit of interior, exterior and high-bay fixtures — offices, classrooms, shops, warehouses, parking lots and wall packs.
- Occupancy, daylight and networked controls, so the fixtures dim and shut off on their own instead of running all night.
- Fixture supply against our own scope — Sarin LED among other manufacturers — specified to the photometrics the space actually needs.
- Removal, recycling and disposal of the old fixtures and lamps, with the documentation the program and your board want on file.
Backup power & life safety
Generators and egress lighting that pass inspection the first time.
- Standby generators and automatic transfer switches — sizing against the loads you nominate, pad, fuel, exhaust and the transfer scheme.
- UPS for critical loads: servers, controls, dispatch and security equipment that cannot ride through the seconds before the generator picks up.
- Emergency and exit lighting — egress fixture layout, battery and inverter units, illumination levels along the path out of the building.
- Fire-extinguisher inspection, tagging and service with our life-safety partner, and annual testing with the record on file before the inspector asks.

How it's funded
Rarely rebated on its own — funded as the make-ready of the project that needs it.
"ComEd provides instant discounts and incentives for as much as 75% of your project cost." LED lighting, controls, and the distribution work that feeds high-efficiency equipment go on the same application; emergency and exit fixtures burn around the clock, so converting them to LED counts too. Open to ComEd business electric customers in northern Illinois; funds are limited and provided first come, first served, and the installing contractor must be ICC-certified. Per-fixture amounts live in ComEd's worksheets, so we price your schedule against the current one.
For straightforward lamp and fixture swaps, "your business can save on energy-efficient lighting products at the time of purchase through participating distributors with no paperwork." The discount comes off the invoice instead of arriving as a check later.
When the new load is EV charging, the service, feeder and panel work is the make-ready the rebate is written for — a base rebate of "Up to $5,000/port" for an ENERGY STAR certified Level 2 charger. Rebate applications are currently closed; the program itself runs through the end of 2028. We design and file the ComEd New Business service request now so the package is ready when the window reopens.
For buildings in Ameren Illinois territory, the utility offers financial incentives for energy-efficient equipment upgrades; values are published in the program's application forms, so we quote from the current forms. LAW Ventures, Ltd. is in the Ameren Illinois SBDI and EV Partners networks.
On private commercial property in Cook County, the whole scope can be financed rather than capitalized: "Cook County commercial-property owners can obtain up to 100-percent upfront financing from private capital providers for qualified upgrades to their HVAC, lighting and solar photovoltaic systems." Repayment is a special assessment line on the property tax bill, and the term "may extend up to the useful life of the eligible improvements, which could be up to 30 years." Private property only — a park district or a school district cannot use it. Generators and transfer equipment are usually capital.
Pre-approval comes before the purchase order. Utility programs do not pay retroactively; we file first, then we build.
